Flower diameter c 5-9 mm

Leaves and bracts tipped with sharp spines. Flowers with 5 narrow whitish petals, solitary, unstalked, with sharp leaf-like bracts at base, becoming fruit like that shown on left.

Most of the spiny things in the picture are flower-bracts, the leaves are similar but long and narrow.
